Introduction:
Welcome to an insightful character overview of Isaac. Here you'll learn about who Isaac was, what he did, and his strengths and weaknesses. Also, we have provided questions related to the story of Isaac to provoke thought. They can also be used for personal/small-group studies.
Glimpse: Isaac is one of the patriarchs of the faith, the son of Abraham. He was miraculously born and lived a blessed life gaining much wealth and status. Isaac never swayed and stayed faithful to God eventually having children of his own, Jacob and Esau, who would begin life hating each other. God used Isaac in mighty ways and trusted the Lord in all that he did.
Isaac's father, Abraham, was promised by God that he would have many descendants. Abraham had no children at this stage but was visited by the Lord and told that Sarah, his wife, would have a child. Eventually, Isaac was born and the promise was fulfilled. However, we see in Genesis 22 that God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. In obedience, Abraham takes Isaac to a mountain, binds him up, and, just before killing him, is stopped by God and commended for his obedience, and a ram is given as a replacement for the sacrifice.
Questions
→ Who did Isaac represent in this event? Does this story parallel God the Father sacrificing his only Son Jesus?
→ Do you agree that God would never ask us to do something that He wouldn't do Himself?
"Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”"
Now Abraham was very old, and Isaac had not yet found a wife. So Abraham commanded his senior servant to go and find him one from the land of his relatives. When he got there, the servant said to God, "See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a young woman, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too'—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this, I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” (Genesis 24:13-14).
Shortly after, a young woman who was related to Abraham walked out carrying her jar of water. The servant called to her, saying, "Please give me a little water from your jar." She replied, "I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink." Therefore, the servant knew that she was the right one and brought her back to Isaac to be married.
Questions
→ Why should we trust God with our spouse?
→ Why would God care who we marry?
"And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted his eyes and looked, and there, the camels were coming. Then Rebekah lifted her eyes, and when she saw Isaac she dismounted from her camel;''
Rebekah gave birth to twins, Jacob and Esau, and these brothers fought each other even from within the womb. There came a great famine in the land, but God told Isaac to stay, as it was the land promised to him and his father's descendants. So Isaac stayed and planted crops, and when he came to harvest them the next year, he reaped a hundredfold. Isaac also had a lot of livestock and became a wealthy and powerful man. Isaac had grown to such a status that the king of Gerar, Abimelech, said to him, "Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us."
As Isaac grew older, his eyes grew dim, and he knew his time was almost done. So Isaac called his eldest son Esau to go and hunt for some game and prepare a dish so that he could receive Isaac's blessing. Rebekah favored her son Jacob and had overheard Isaac and Esau talking. She devised a plan for Jacob to take the blessing instead of his brother Esau by cooking Isaac's favorite dish, putting Jacob in Esau's clothes, and placing goat skin on his smooth hands and neck because Esau was very hairy. Isaac was therefore deceived and gave the blessing to Jacob instead of Esau. He later gave Esau a blessing too. Isaac lived to 180 years old, then died.
Questions
→ Why should we trust God, even if it seems counterintuitive/doesn't make sense?
→ What stands out to you in Isaac's story?
“Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, “Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him—and indeed he shall be blessed.””

Weaknesses:
Conclusion
Isaac was very blessed and even threatened kings with his influence, but he remained faithful to God. Materialistic things should not hold as much weight to us as eternal things and the greatest thing of all is our relationship with God. It was out of his relationship with God that Isaac was blessed and in his obedience, he saw fruit and abundance.
''For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life''
