Glimpse: Matthew is the writer of one of the four gospels located at the start of the New Testament and also walked with Jesus as one of His 12 disciples. He was a tax collector before coming to Christ and was willing to leave everything and follow Him. Matthew isn't mentioned much in scripture but we can still gain insight on his character and story.
Matthew, formerly known as Levi, was a tax collector. His call to discipleship is recounted in Matthew 9:9-13:
"As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ On hearing this, Jesus said, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.’"

Conclusion
Although there isn't much mention of Matthew in scripture, his story is still inspiring as he made a huge leap of faith to follow Jesus. As a tax collector, he would have been used to judgment, but now he was not only being judged but also persecuted for his faith. We can learn that following Jesus requires sacrificing our own desires and comforts for the sake of Him who has saved us.
