Who was Andrew from the Bible?

Key facts

  • When: roughly around 5 B.C - 60 A.D
  • Where: Galilee
  • Name meaning: ‘man’ or ‘manly’

Glimpse: Andrew was a disciple of Jesus Christ and was called from his position as a fisherman to be a fisherman of men. Andrew was the first to take up the call and walked with Jesus through his earthly ministry. Although he is not mentioned often, Andrew is seen to have a large influence on the 12 disciples.

The call

Andrew was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus and was the first person to follow Him. This account is seen in Matthew 4:18-22, but the account in Luke provides additional details. In Luke, Jesus performs a miracle by saying to Peter, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” They had been fishing all night and had caught nothing, yet they obeyed and let down their nets.

Suddenly, their nets were filled so full that they began to break, and they could not fit all the fish on the boat. In Matthew, Jesus asks Peter and Andrew to follow Him, and they agree, leaving everything behind to do just that.

Questions

→ What impact did this miracle have on Andrew? Have you had any impactful miracles in your life?

→ Is it best to do things in our own strength?

" Jesus said to them, “Follow Me. I will make you fish for men!”"

Matthew 4:19

Disciple of Christ

The Gospel of John describes Andrew, along with his brother Peter, as a disciple of John the Baptist before being called by Jesus to follow Him.

Andrew is also seen in the story of the feeding of the 5,000. In this account, the disciples are trying to find a way to feed the crowds that have followed Jesus, and Andrew notices a little boy with two fish and five loaves of bread. Jesus miraculously multiplies the food and distributes it to thousands of people. Andrew is recognized as one of the more prominent disciples but is mentioned only 12 times in Scripture.

Questions

→ What does the story of the feeding of the five thousand tell you about Andrew (John 6:1-14)? Do you believe faith can grow?

→ When have you ever had to walk by faith in your life? What was the outcome?

" One of His followers was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He said to Jesus, “There is a boy here who has five loaves of barley bread and two small fish. What is that for so many people?” ''

John 6:8

Strengths:

  • Trust: Andrew was the first to follow Jesus and showed great trust in doing so.
  • Influence: Andrew was one of the more prominent disciples and therefore had greater influence.

Weaknesses:

  • Doubt: In the story of the feeding of the five thousand, we see that Andrew doubted that the small amount of food the boy had would be any good for feeding the masses of people.

Conclusion

Scripture doesn't say much about Andrew, but we can learn from his quick response to the call of God that sometimes it just takes being the first to step out. Stepping out causes the way to be opened for many people to follow. Let's be trailblazers for our generation.

''For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life''

John 3:16
