Who was Paul from the Bible?

Key facts

  • When: roughly around 5 B.C to 65 A.D
  • Where: Jerusalem
  • Name meaning: 'Small' or 'Humble'

Glimpse: Paul was a pharisee in the time of Jesus who was a very legalistic man. Paul is described as being a ‘Hebrew of Hebrews’ and was so zealous that he began giving orders to kill all the disciples of Jesus.

He says in Philippians 3:4-7 'If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.'.

The Damascus Experience

One day, as Saul—later known as Paul—was journeying near Damascus, a bright light from heaven shone around him, causing him to fall to the ground. It was the Lord, who asked Saul why he was persecuting Him. Saul responded with, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" He was instructed to go into the city for further instructions. As a result of this encounter, Saul was left blind and did not eat or drink for three days.

In Damascus, there was a disciple named Ananias who was instructed by the Lord to go to Saul, heal his blindness, and pray for him. Ananias obeyed, and when he found Saul, he prayed for him, his sight was restored, he was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he was baptized. Saul then went to Arabia for three years.

Upon returning to Jerusalem, Saul—now going by his Roman name Paul—proclaimed the good news with boldness and courage. Although he initially faced fear and skepticism from the disciples, Barnabas vouched for him and introduced him to the apostles. Following this, Paul embarked on several missionary journeys, establishing churches which are later mentioned in the epistles.

During his journeys, Paul encountered numerous disputes and challenges. He had a significant disagreement with Barnabas over whether to take a man named John Mark on their mission. This disagreement led to their separation: Barnabas took John Mark with him, while Paul chose Silas as his companion. Along their travels, Paul and Silas were joined by another follower named Timothy. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Paul and his team continued their mission, and the number of believers and churches grew daily.

Questions

→ Was your salvation as radical as Paul's?

→ What's the difference between Paul's life before he was saved and after he was saved? Is there always a difference after salvation?

"As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

Acts 9:3-4

Prison break

One day, while on their way to prayer, Paul and Silas were followed by a slave girl who was possessed by a spirit of divination. She kept shouting, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.". She did this for many days until Paul, troubled by her actions, commanded the spirit to leave her.

The girl’s owners were furious because they had been profiting from her fortune-telling abilities. When they realized what Paul had done, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities, accusing them of disrupting the city. Paul and Silas were then thrown into prison.

Despite their circumstances, Paul and Silas remained steadfast in their faith. At midnight, while praying and singing hymns to God, a powerful earthquake shook the prison. All the doors flew open, and the chains fell off the prisoners. The jailer, fearing that the prisoners had escaped, was about to take his own life. But Paul called out to him, reassuring him that all the prisoners were still there.

The jailer, astonished, asked Paul and Silas what he must do to be saved. They shared the message of Jesus with him, and he and his entire household were baptized. Afterward, Paul and Silas were released from prison.

Unbeknownst to the authorities, Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, a status that afforded them certain legal protections. As such, the magistrates were alarmed to learn that they had been imprisoned without a trial and mistreated. They were urged to leave the city. Paul and Silas went to the home of a woman named Lydia, a merchant of purple cloth, where they were welcomed and encouraged by the new believers.

Questions

→ Have you ever prayed in a difficult situation? What happened after you prayed?

→ Why do you think Paul and Silas were singing and praising instead of being fearful?

"For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.''

Acts 9:16

Healing Miracles

Paul continued his ministry despite enduring numerous hardships, including beatings, imprisonment, and false accusations. His journey often took him by sea, where he faced multiple shipwrecks. One notable instance occurred when he was shipwrecked on the island of Malta.

After arriving in Malta, Paul gathered sticks to build a fire. While warming himself, a viper emerged from the firewood and bit him. The island's inhabitants, seeing the venomous snake bite, initially thought Paul was cursed. However, when Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects, they changed their minds and began to regard him as a god.

On Malta, Paul encountered the father of Publius, the island’s leading citizen, who was suffering from a severe illness. Paul laid hands on him, and he was miraculously healed. This healing led many others on the island to seek Paul’s help, and he healed all who came to him.

Throughout his ministry, Paul wrote thirteen epistles (letters) to various churches, offering exhortation, praise, correction, and addressing various issues faced by the early Christian communities. His writings, which form a significant portion of the New Testament, include letters such as Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, and Ephesians.

Paul also mentored Timothy, with whom he had a deep and influential relationship. Timothy was a key figure in early Christianity, and Paul's mentorship greatly shaped his ministry and leadership. Despite the trials he faced, Paul’s dedication to spreading the gospel and nurturing the early church left a lasting impact on Christian history.

Questions

→ What stands out to you most about Paul's story?

→ What are you going to do differently after reading about this?

“ But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.”

Phillipians 3:7

Paul writing letters

Strengths:

  • Passion: Even before he came to faith in Christ, Paul was a very passionate man and was held highly as a pharisee for his legalistic behavior. This passion and drive transferred over after coming to Christ which is part of why he was such an unstoppable force
  • Wise: Not only did he write thirteen books of the Bible that are full of wisdom, but he traveled to many countries preaching the gospel in multiple languages whilst also evading murderers and debating with philosophers
  • Faith: Paul had great faith and was not easily disheartened. Even after being shipwrecked 3 times, beaten close to death multiple times, and imprisoned multiple times, he kept going

Weaknesses:

  • Flexibility: As we can see, Paul was a very legalistic man before he was saved, and even after he was saved, Paul liked things to be just right. This is shown in his dispute with Barnabas which caused a harsh split

Conclusion

Paul's life is full of ups and downs and again shows that it doesn't matter who you are, God can use you. But also, it shows that there is no limitation on how much God can use you based on your past. God will take you to the highest of places if you would just die to your own sinful and fleshy desires and humbly obey Him in all that He asks. Paul not only did that but faced persecution head-on without flinching. Prayer is the key to being able to walk at this level of boldness.

''For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life''
