Introduction:
Welcome to an insightful character overview of Noah. Here you'll learn about who Noah was, what he did, and his strengths and weaknesses. Also, we have provided questions related to the story of Noah to provoke thought. They can also be used for personal/small-group studies.
Glimpse: Noah was a righteous man living in an evil world. He was actually found to be the only one found righteous in the eyes of the Lord and therefore was saved from the calamity that God unleashed on the world. Noah worked hard and obeyed God in all He asked him to do.
In the time leading up to the flood, the world had descended into a state of profound wickedness and corruption. The term "sons of God" is traditionally understood to refer to fallen angels or divine beings who took human wives, resulting in the birth of a hybrid race known as the Nephilim. This union led to a corrupt and violent generation that was opposed to the natural order established by God.
Genesis 6:1-5 describes this period:
' When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.'
The pervasive wickedness and corruption of humanity led God to decide to bring judgment upon the earth through the Great Flood. This flood was intended to cleanse the earth of its corruption and to start anew with Noah, who was found to be righteous in his generation.
Questions
→ How does our world compare to the time of Noah? Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the darkness of this world?
→ How do you shine your light in such darkness?
'Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.'
However, there was one man, Noah, who pleased God and was righteous in his generation. Noah walked with God and had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. God told Noah that He was going to destroy the earth because of its wickedness but instructed Noah to build an ark out of gopher wood and take his family, along with two of every kind of animal, into the boat. Noah diligently worked on the ark, and after a long period of construction, it was completed. Noah and his household entered the ark.
God then gave Noah additional instructions: “You shall take with you seven pairs of every clean animal, a male, and a female; two of every unclean animal, a male and a female; and seven pairs of birds of the air, male, and female, to keep their species alive on the face of the earth. For after seven more days, I will cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.” (Genesis 7:2-4). Noah obeyed every command, and the Lord sealed the ark by shutting the enormous door behind them.
Questions
→ Why did God ask Noah to build the ark rather than just saving him from the flood Himself?
→ Why does God seek obedience from us?
'And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.'
So God flooded the earth, and everything living outside of the ark was destroyed. As the waters persisted, God remembered Noah and everyone on the ark, and the waters began to recede. After forty days, Noah sent out a raven to search for dry land, followed by a dove. The dove could find no place to land and returned to Noah. He waited another seven days and sent out the dove again. This time, the dove did not return, signaling that dry ground was starting to appear.
Eventually, the earth dried, and Noah and all those on the ark were able to step out onto dry ground. Noah worshiped and praised God, and God blessed Noah and his family, commanding them with the same directive given to Adam and Eve: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth." God then promised never again to flood the earth and set a rainbow in the clouds as a sign of this covenant.
Noah became a farmer and planted a vineyard. However, he became drunk on the wine from his vineyard and lay uncovered in his tent. Ham entered the tent, saw his father in this state, and told his brothers. Shem and Japheth took a garment, walked backward into the tent, and covered their father without looking at him. When Noah awoke from his drunkenness and learned what Ham had done, he cursed Ham but blessed Shem and Japheth.
Questions
→ When have you ever had to be patient? Why is patience a good thing to have?
→ When you see a rainbow, what do you think?
'And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.'

Weaknesses:
Conclusion
Noah's obedience is inspiring but his hard work reveals his true character. It would have taken him a very long time to build the ark and he would have faced mockery and ridicule from surrounding neighbors, but he remained steadfast and reaped the rewards. True obedience is answering the call of God no matter when, what, who, how, or why.
